A business owner who has a fleet of vehicles may decide that he can get away without something as complicated as fleet insurance. At least, he may think he can get away with it. Regulatory agencies and law enforcement personnel often hold an extremely different view on this matter. If the law enforcement and regulatory agencies are put aside for a second, the business owner can imagine a situation where he does not buy fleet insurance.
The first thing that happens is that his costs will go down. The insurance premiums that he pays to the company do not get paid out. This assumes that the business owner also decides not to take out an individual policy on each vehicle. Few people take this risk, but let us assume that the individual vehicle is not covered under a policy either. The business may save money on premiums for a while, but if the business has a large fleet, it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs. The damage done to each vehicle determines how much the business must pay out to the other people involved in the parties. The business must also repair or replace the vehicle. If the vehicle was involved was a lorry hauling cargo, the value of the cargo must be paid as well.
The hypothetical situation described above becomes quite expensive. A lawsuit can add to the expense considerably. The business owner can protect against these expenses with fleet insurance. When an accident can cause millions of pounds in damages, the premiums for fleet insurance are not so expensive after all.
