This car was a bright red Ford Festiva. Probably one of the smallest cars ever made. My girls and I used to pack ourselves into that tiny little car and cruise everywhere for some driving experience. We would take it into places even we were unsure we would get out of. We live in Hawaii, and there are a lot of secret spots all over the islands. Only catch is, you need a truck or four wheel drive of some sort to get to most of these places. Not us, we took that little Festiva into some pretty rough terrain type roads, and never, not once, did we ever get stuck. My very good friend Debra, the owner of “the red roller skate” was very gutsy and brave for all the many places she was willing to take her only source of transportation into.
Those were some awesome times. I think about those days a lot. We had fun times, hard times, and the BEST times in that car. I always refer to those days as the “single days”. All who knew “the Red roller skate” days, now what I mean by that. Let me explain. As many times as we took that car, and packed it with people, as many times as we drug it threw the worst four wheel drive roads, it never let us down. Then it started to happen, all the girls that hung out together started getting involved, married, having children. And one day, Debra allowed her boyfriend to use “the red roller skate” to go to work. On his way home that day he crashed it…Debra was crushed.S he had never let anyone but me drive that car. She called me later that day to share the news, and we decided that day that “the red roller skate” was our “single days” car. It was small and could not accommodate any of our new lifestyles. It could handle the rough riding, it could handle the weight…But it could not handle being replaced by a man, being driven by a man, and by god, it was not gonna transport any children..And to think we always called the car a girl!
